After a slow first ascent, the bike and I were feeling good. The sun was out and I was enjoying the downhill stretch.

First flat, about thirty minutes into ride. This was annoying but not disastrous. Then I broke my pump. This was a disaster. Couldn’t get the tire pressure above 20 or 30 PSI (estimate.) The situation was even worse considering I was riding off-road with a fully loaded rear.

I managed to get my rear tire re-inflated at a garage in a village near-by. Riding on roads was not fun at all with that tire and a loaded bike. But I was optimistic after getting my tire back to normal. That was, until I looked at my watch - it was 3PM and I was standing next to a ’ Winchester 7 miles sign’.

I continued on, but by this point it was 4:30 and I had another slow puncture in my rear tire. There was no way I was going to make it to Amberley or finish the route. It was time to bail-out.
